The Author

Emily Jenkins (born 1967), who also writes under the name E. Lockhart, is an American writer of children's picture books, young-adult novels, and adult fiction. Jenkins's first book as by E. Lockhart was a novel, The Boyfriend List, published in 2005. There are three sequels, The Boy Book (2006), The Treasure Map of Boys (2009), and Real Live Boyfriends (2010), and the four are also known collectively as the Ruby Oliver novels after their central protagonist. Another novel, The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks (2008), was a finalist for both the National Book Award for Young People's Literature and the Michael L. Printz Award. Her picture books, written as Emily Jenkins, have won some honors including Boston Globe–Horn Book Award Picture Books runners-up and the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Book Award.

Jenkins grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Seattle, Washington. In high school she attended summer drama schools at Northwestern University and the Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis. She attended Lakeside School, a private high school in North Seattle. She went to Vassar College—where she studied illustrated books and interviewed Barry Moser for her senior thesis—and graduate school at Columbia University, where she earned a doctorate in English literature. She currently lives in the New York City area. 

Personal Experience with This Book

I heard about this book from some Youtube channels. I was thrilled by the fact that nobody actually said something about the story line when talked about this book. I became curious and I decided to give it a try and, I did not regret it.

We were liars is an amazing story about a family, The Sinclairs. This family has some prestige and money and they always spend vacations together in a island owned by the eldest of the family. Our protagonist is Cadense Sinclair, is a seventeen years old gilr who is trying to live a different life from the one she was living. Cadense had an accident back when she was fifteen but she does not remember anything about it. The story basically is Cadense trying to figure out what happened to her and why she does not remember anything.

We also had the “Liars”. They are Cadence’s cousins and one friend of the family who has always gone to the island for vacations, Gat. They are Cadense best friends and they love each other very much. Cadense is especially in love with Gat who is also in love with her, so we do have a romance here.

I really loved this story. I was amazed by the way things go up and then you realize the truth behind everything. I really liked that the story centers not only in Cadense and her accident but also in the Family relation, the way she interacts with everyone in her family and the way they tried to solve all the problems that a normal family do has. Moreover, the fact that actually you do expect something to happen from the beginning, because the story from the beginning presents to you in that way, you will be surprise by the ending. Even if you were expecting a twist, you will not be able to guess easily the ending, which for me was very important because I was actually waiting for that to happen but I did not see it coming and when I finished the book I was thinking backwards on how the author gave me the clues during the whole story, and I found them.

I haven’t read anything else from E. Lockhart but I am going to start reading everything she has written. I loved so much the way she wrote this book that she has got another fan. I recommend the book to everyone. I will assure you will like it.
